Riding the famous train from Oslo to Bergen via Flåm
The Oslo to Bergen by train experience starts with a ride on the Bergensbanen (Bergen Railway), taking you over the rugged Hardangervidda mountain plateau. From the station at Myrdal, situated 866 metres above sea level, your journey continues on the Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana). This popular train ride offers breathtaking scenery as its vintage rail cars weave their way down the mountains on a 20-kilometre journey to the idyllic fjord village of Flåm, with a stop for a photo at the dazzling Kjosfossen waterfall.
Another major highlight of the train ride from Oslo to Bergen via Flåm is the 2-hour cruise on the steep-sided fjords of Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord. From Gudvangen, you’ll transfer from boat to coach bus for the next leg of the journey. In Voss, you’ll reconnect to the Bergen Railway for the final part of your picturesque journey to Bergen.
Planning your train journey from Oslo to Bergen
This amazing Oslo to Bergen railway experience can be done in one day, but of course you will want to have extra days in your itinerary to enjoy the variety of attractions in Oslo and the top sights in Bergen. In as little as 4 days you can enjoy an express round-trip from Oslo on the Norway in a Nutshell tour, with an overnight in Bergen, but for a better sightseeing experience we recommend spending 6 days on the classic round-trip, which also includes a night in Flåm.
Want to tailor your trip from Oslo to Bergen via the Flåm Railway? Nordic Visitor specialises in creating flexible tour packages in Norway, so our local travel experts can easily modify an itinerary to your interests.
For example, we can combine a trip to Geirangerfjord and a Norway in a Nutshell tour in one package for you. Another suggested addition is an extended train journey from Bergen to Stavanger, with the possibility of a day trip to the famous Pulpit Rock.
Why not add a cruise to your Oslo to Bergen railway itinerary and see even more fjords? A cruise along the west coast from Bergen is a wonderful extension to any train tour package in Norway.
