Travel around Oslo & East Norway
East Norway has a little bit of everything to offer travellers: small mountain villages, expansive national parks, forests with great hiking trails, Olympic ski hills and plenty of cultural attractions. Home to the capital city, Oslo -- and roughly half of the country’s population, Norway’s eastern region is the starting point for most holidays in the country. And with Sweden at the border, it’s is a fabulous base for exploring the rest of Scandinavia.
The largest international airport in Norway is located in Oslo, so it’s is usually the first destination for visitors. With flight times of about 2 hours from London and 8 hours from the US East Coast, Oslo makes a great place to start a Norwegian holiday. No matter the time of year, it’s ideal to spend at least a day or two in the city and enjoy all the great museums, restaurants and parks that Oslo has to offer —not to mention beautiful architecture like the Royal Palace.
If you want to venture further out and explore the Norwegian countryside at your own pace, a road trip through East Norway is the way to go. By car, it’s just a short distance from Oslo to places like the mountain resort town of Geilo, the 1994 Winter Olympics city of Lillehammer and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed village of Røros. If you want to do some hiking in the hills and valleys of East Norway, then plan your self-drive tour between May and September for the best weather conditions.
Want to see the Norwegian fjords from eastern Norway? If you have around 7 days or more, you can extend your trip to Norway’s west coast. From Oslo you can also take a round-trip Norway in a Nutshell® railway journey to Bergen in western Norway, a route encompassing a steep and picturesque train ride over the mountains, a short cruise on the majestic Nærøyfjord and some free time in the colourful fjord village of Flåm.
With 10 - 14 days or more to travel, why not expand your Norway trip to include neighbouring Scandinavian countries?
