Highlights of the train ride from Oslo to Trondheim
As Norway’s second highest rail line after the Bergen Railway, the Dovre Railway includes great variations in elevation and terrain. The journey takes you over the over the rugged Dovrefjell mountain plateau and along the beautiful Gudbrandsdalen valley, passing through 8 kilometres of mountain tunnels and making a steep, winding descent down to the Trondheim lowlands.
On the way you’ll enjoy scenery of pristine nature reserves and small towns with traditional log houses. Overall, the train ride from Oslo to Trondheim is approximately 7 hours.
The ultimate highlight of the Dovre Railway journey is of course the city at the end of the line, Trondheim. After your relaxing train ride, stretch your legs with a stroll to the historic Nidaros Cathedral and a walk to the city’s historic Bakklandet neighbourhood to admire the rows of colourful, old wooden houses. Or for a more vigorous walk, head up to Kristiansten Fortress for a panoramic view over the city, surrounding hills and coastline.
Customisations for your holiday on the Dovre Railway in Norway
As Nordic Visitor specialises in creating bespoke itineraries in Norway, you can easily combine a trip on the Dovrebanen train trip from Oslo to Trondheim with other scenic journeys by land and sea.
The most popular option is to add an overnight cruise from Trondheim to the city of Bergen, “The Gateway to the Fjords”. Sailing to Bergen, you would have the option to join a guided shore excursion to the picture-perfect Atlantic Ocean Road. After a day or two in Bergen, we recommend taking the Norway in a Nutshell® railway journey back to Oslo, a route that includes a trip on the famous Flåm Railway, a short fjord cruise and a thrilling ride on a steep, twisting mountain road.
