A blast from the Medieval past in the middle of Oslo

Akershus Fortress is a medieval castle, built in the late 1290’s by King Haakon V to protect Oslo, the capital of Norway.

The fortress has withstood many sieges and served as a prison for a period of time. Today it remains a military area, but is open to the public for daily tours in the summer months. Also within the walls of the Akershus Fortress are the Norwegian Armed Forces Museum and Norway’s Resistance Museum.

The Fortress area is a popular venue for major events, including concerts, holiday celebrations and ceremonies.
