Located on the west side of Trondheim is the Trøndelag Folk Museum (Trøndelag Folkemuseum), a fascinating museum of cultural history with a large open-air section showing how people in the city lived in the old days.
The museum is situated in a scenic natural setting, and from the ruins of King Sverre's medieval castle you'll have an impressive view over the city and the fjord. In all, there are over 60 buildings from the region arranged as an “old town”, with a market square that includes a shop selling delicious old-fashioned sweets.
Also on site is the Sverresborg Ski Museum, which tells the story of skiing both as a competitive sport and as a practical means of transport throughout Norwegian history. The Haltdalen stave church from the year 1170 is another of the museum's main attractions.
