Stavanger offers variety of interesting attractions, live music festivals, gourmet dining and a thriving nightlife—just a few of the reasons it was selected as a European Capital of Culture in 2008.
With its roots in the Viking Age, Stavanger earned its position among the most important Norwegian cities in the second half of the 20th century, after the discovery of oil in the North Sea. Today this city offers a variety of interesting attractions, live music festivals, gourmet dining and a thriving nightlife.
Not far from the city is the remarkable Lysefjord with its great hiking routes and famous sights of Kjærag and Pulpit Rock, accessible via sightseeing cruises that depart daily from the city harbour. The popular recreational areas, Mosvatnet and Stokkavatnet, are also situated near the city.
