Visit the narrow cobblestone streets and beautiful 18th and 19th century houses in Old Town.
At the heart of Stavanger is the city’s Old Town (Gamle Stavanger), with its narrow cobblestone streets and beautiful 18th and 19th century houses—one of Northern Europe’s largest surviving collections of buildings from this period.
Here you will find the Stavanger Museum, a collection of exhibits commemorating the city’s past as Norway’s herring capital, and the Stavanger Cathedral (Stavanger domkirke), Norway's oldest church, completed around 1125—the year Stavanger counts as its founding.
This part of the city can be found along the west side of the harbour, where several cruise ships moor during the summer. Owing to its picture-perfect setting, the Old Town also contains quite a few art studios and small galleries.
