The Swiss chalet-style Fretheim Hotel in Flåm was originally a farm until word of the Flåm River’s excellent salmon fishing reached Britain, attracting numerous English lords to the Sognefjord area in the mid 1800s. By 1879 the farmer, Christen Fretheim, had so many visiting fishermen at this residence that he decided to build separate quarters for guests.
Though this first-class hotel has grown considerably, the original farmhouse has since been restored with period furnishings and a grand library that evoke the late 19th century. And as the house was once nicknamed “The English Villa”, they even serve proper English tea.
