  • Day 1: WELCOME TO LOFOTEN

Welcome to Svolvær, the “Capital of the Lofoten Islands” a small, picturesque fishing village with a charming Scandinavian atmosphere. Here you will find a variety of small galleries, shops and cultural attractions nestled under the town’s landmark mountain, Svolværgeita (the Svolvær Goat), a popular challenge for climbers.

If you arrive early, we recommend walk to the nearby island of Svinøya for a visit to the art museum and fish racks or a stroll around town for excellent views of the sea and surrounding islands, which is especially lovely in the soft winter light.

    Spend the night in Svolvær.

The next leg of your tour, the Hurtigruten Coastal Voyage, begins boarding at 18:30 from Svolvær harbour and departs for its southbound journey at 20:30. Today the ship crosses the Arctic Circle, sailing past such highlights as the famed peaks of the Seven Sisters Mountains, Torghatten and the island of Sandnessjøen. The Seven Sisters mountains are around 1000 metres tall, and according to folklore, the mountains are trolls that turned into stone when they looked at the sun. Meanwhile, Torghatten is known for the tunnel that goes through the mountain, which was formed during the Ice Age. The last port of call for the day is the charming town of Rørvik, which is home to several museums.

OUR SELF-GUIDED TOURS
This is an independent, self-guided tour where all accommodation, train and cruise tickets (as specified in the itinerary) will be pre-booked by Nordic Visitor. However, all travellers are ultimately responsible for getting to hotels and to any train or cruise departure points by the specified times.

HURTIGRUTEN CRUISE
The cruise includes cabin accommodation (unspecified cabin with windows/port holes) with private facilities, and breakfast is included. All ships have restaurants, a cafeteria, laundry room, WIFI and on-board activities. The Hurtigruten Coastal voyages are not like conventional cruises as there are 11 different ships that vary in size and age that sail the Norwegian coast on different dates. Optional shore excursions are available onboard, and we recommend that you pre-book them (can be done until 4 weeks prior to arrival, depending on availability). We are unable to offer guaranteed cabin numbers for port-to-port and short voyages (less than 5 nights). You can disembark the ship in ports where the stop is for more than 30 minutes.

NORTHERN LIGHTS & WINTER TRAVEL
Travelling in the winter season in Norway is highly recommended and very enjoyable. You will get a chance to see the snow covered landscape, and it‘s not as cold as one would think. For more information about weather conditions, please refer to our Norway travel guide. Please be advised that northern lights can only be seen from Lofoten and Northern Norway.

In northern Norway, northern lights activity is strongest between mid October to early April. Auroras can only be seen at night if the sky is clear and there is solar activity. Please note that sightings cannot be guaranteed. For more information about northern lights, please refer to the travel guide.

SPRING TRAVEL IN NORWAY
If you are travelling to Norway during the spring (end of March - end of April), please be advised that many attractions and museums still have winter opening hours during this time.
