This 5 days / 4 nights stay will let you experience one of Northern Norways most remarkable nature phenomena. Since 1986, a large number of killer whales have been feasting on their main food source, herring, in Lofoten, Vestfjorden and Ofoten, offering a unique opportunity to get an up close experience of these fascinating animals. Transported in fast going sightseeing boats, specially designed for whale watching, and escorted by whale experts, this is an excellent way to get a close encounter with one of the largest animals on earth. Surrounded by the wild and untouched nature of Northern Norway, you are up for a true wildlife experience.
Day 1: Arrival Oslo
Arrive at Gardermoen Airport; meet-and-greet followed by transfer to your accommodations situated in the heart of Oslo City. If you arrive early, you will have the opportunity to see the capital of Norway with all it has to offer, getting you ready for an adventurous trip up north. Stay in a hotel in Oslo city central.
Day 2: Crossing the Arctic Circle
By the airport express train you will be transported to Oslo Gardermoen Airport, where you will board the flight taking you to Harstad, located on Hinnøya, the largest island in Norway. After settling into your centrally located hotel, you will have the rest of the day of to explore the town taking pride in calling itself The Cultural Capital of the north. After trying out one of the local culinary facilities, and maybe also one of the lively bars or pubs, you might get lucky and spot the northern lights on your way back to your hotel.
Day 3: The ultimate wildlife experience
Today you will be picked up at your hotel and driven to Evenes, a 45 minute drive through marvelous surroundings, from where the safari boats await you. You will have the opportunity to join in on the “real deal”, cruising the fjord in an open RIB, letting you see, feel and smell the wilderness up close. Being lucky, you might get to see the remarkable hunting technique of the killer whales, as they kill the herring by smashing their tales, gently picking the dead fish one by one from the surface. Other wildlife can also be seen, as the hunting whales are often accompanied by a large number of White Tailed Sea Eagles, also looking for a piece of the action. The expert guides, always present on the boats, will supply you with whatever information you need to fully understand the phenomena you have witnessed. The safari also includes a light meal. The safari will end in Lødingen where you will have a short summary of the days tour and be served with some warm drinks before your transfer back to Harstad where you will be spending the night.
Day 4: Returning to Oslo
By the airport express bus you will head for the airport, catching the flight back to Oslo. You can now spend the rest of the day shopping for Christmas, or if travelling in January, doing a bargain at the new years’ sale. Enjoy the evening in one of Oslo’s many coffee shops, bars or restaurants.
Day 5: Departure day
Transfer by express train to Gardermoen International Airport. If your flight is in the afternoon, then you will have time for some last-minute shopping, to visit one of Oslo’s many museums or just relax at a café after an enjoyable holiday.
