Introduction

This alternative to the Norway in a Nutshell itinerary allows you to ride the Flåm Railway in addition to travelling the full length of the Sognefjord by boat. It’s the perfect tour for travellers looking for a boat experience, and also gives you the opportunity to travel the famous rail line between Oslo and Bergen. In addition, you’ll get a thorough introduction to Norway’s two biggest cities, Oslo and Bergen, a must for a first-time visitor to Norway.

Itinerary

Day 1: The Capital of Norway
Arrival at Oslo international airport; Individual transfer to your accommodation, situated in the heart of Oslo City. If you arrive early, we recommend getting the Oslo Tourist Pass, which provides free travel on all public transport, free admission to over 25 museums and sites, discounts on further attractions and sightseeing, restaurants and shops. Stay in a hotel in Oslo City Central. Stay the night in Oslo.


Day 2 & 3: Sognefjord in a Nutshell: Part One - Geilo
Today you’ll start early and head to Oslo Central Station, where you’ll board the Bergensbanen train that will take you over the mountain roof of Norway on your way to Bergen. The ride, voted one of the 20 best railways in the world, will take you through the charming villages of Gol and Geilo. Enjoy 2 full days in the activity mountain village “Geilo”. Among activities offered in Geilo are; Hiking tours, biking tours, golf, and horse riding.


Day 4: Sognefjord in a Nutshell: Part One – Flåm
From Geilo you will get back on the train and head to Myrdal Station. In Myrdal, you’ll switch trains to take the Flåm Railway, an incredible 20 km ride with a difference in altitude of 900 meters, taking you down to the beautiful town of Flåm. In Flåm, you’ll have free admission to the Flåm Railway Documentation Centre, located right beside Flåm Station, where you can learn about the construction of the world’s steepest railway line. Stay the night in the Flåm area.

Day 5: Sognefjord in a Nutshell: Part Two – Flåm
Enjoy the first half of the day in Flåm. In Flåm, you’ll have free admission to the Flåm Railway Documentation Centre, located right beside Flåm Station, where you can learn about the construction of the world’s steepest railway line. At 3:30 p.m., you’ll board the express boat and get ready for an amazing fjord experience, starting with the tall, impressive mountains along the Aurlandsfjord. Out towards the sea, the scenery opens up more and there is teeming, varied bird life. In the middle of the fjord, you’ll see passengers being transferred from the express boat to the ferry. The Sognefjord is Norway’s deepest (1,309 m) and longest (204 km) fjord. Arrival in Bergen, where you’ll be spending the night, is scheduled for 8:40 p.m.


Day 6: Highlights of Bergen
Despite being an international city, Bergen has kept the atmosphere and charm of a small town. Your accommodation in the centre of the city makes an excellent starting point for exploring the “capital of the fjords”. Bergen is a wonderful, must-visit city, full of life and culture. In Bergen you’ll find Bryggen, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site; exceptional old houses; the vibrant fish and flower market; cable cars offering stunning views; great museums, and more. In the afternoon you will board the train that will take you directly back to Oslo. Now it’s time to lie back and enjoy the worry-free features of travelling by train, escorted by beautiful scenery.


Day 7: Departure Day
Individual transfer to Gardermoen International Airport. If your flight is in the afternoon, you’ll have time for some last-minute shopping, visit one of Oslo´s museums, or just relax at a café after an enjoyable holiday.

We have three categories for accommodation on this tour: Simple, Comfort and Quality.

Simple

Accommodation is in budget hotels, farmhouses, and well-appointed guesthouses. All rooms are with private shower or bath and WC. Breakfast is always provided and is included in the price. Bed linen is included in the price, but beds are not always made. In the more remote areas, most places of accommodation offer optional evening meals.


Comfort

These are in well-appointed comfort hotels. All rooms are with private shower or bath and WC. Breakfast is always provided and is included in the price. Many have their own restaurant.


Quality

These are in quality four-star hotels or the best hotels available at each location. All rooms are with private shower or bath and WC. All hotels provide breakfast (included in the price) and have their own restaurant.
