This is a true winter safari, allowing you to fulfil the dream of cruising on a snowmobile through the most dramatic landscape one can imagine.

Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Oslo, Norway’s Capital
Today you will be arriving at Gardermoen airport. Upon arrival, you’ll be picked up by our private chauffer and taken to your accommodation in the city center of Oslo. After checking into your hotel you will have your information meeting with your Travel Consultant, who will provide you with your winter adventure itinerary. Later, you will have time off to enjoy some of Oslo’s many cafés, bars and restaurants.

Day 2: Oslo Highlights

Be sure to visit the Holmenkollen Ski Jump, take a walk in Vigelandsparken and visit the scene of the dramatic theft of the Munch paintings, “Skrik” and “Madonna”, at the Munch Museum. Oslo has a lot to offer, and a peek into the history of the Vikings might be a good idea. On the peninsula Bygdøy, you will find the Viking Ship Museum, displaying the greatest archaeological findings of our savage ancestors.

Day 3: The Glacier Town of Svalbard
Enjoy a pleasant breakfast at the hotel. Our driver will then pick you up and bring you comfortably to the airport, and the second leg of the holiday is about to begin. On arriving in Longyearbyen after a 4-hour flight from Oslo, you will board the airport bus taking you to your accommodation for the night, situated in the middle of Longyearbyen.

Day 4: Snowmobiling at 78° North
In the morning, the tour leader will meet you for a short briefing. You will then be taken to the tour production department, where all necessary clothes and equipment will be allocated to you. Snowmobiles, petrol, oil and provisions will already have been organized. Before setting out, the tour leader will give you a basic introduction to the driving technique. You’ll then start at a moderate speed so that everybody can get used to snowmobile driving. In order to drive the snowmobile, you need to be in good health (no bad back, neck, arms or wrists). It is also important keep an adventurous mind at all times, as this is not a tour for nervous people. We will start by heading for the Russian settlement on Svalbard, Barentsburg, where lunch is prepared. You then head on to Kapp Linné/Isfjord Radio, which is situated at the mouth of the Isfjord. Kapp Linné/Isfjord Radio is a beautiful and peaceful place, far from civilization and facing the open Arctic Ocean. The radio station Isfjord Radio offers charming rooms (shower/WC in the corridor), a lounge and dining room. Dinner is served in the evening.

Seasons
Seasons From 7 March through 31 May

Duration
8 days / 7 nights

Information
The excursion route may vary due to current weather and ice conditions.
A list of necessary personal equipment is provided with booking confirmation.
The excursion is normally not very demanding, but be prepared for swift weather changes and cold wind/weather. Driving is set to 7–9 hours per day, and it is recommended that the participants drive themselves (which is easier and more comfortable than being a passenger all the time). Norwegian traffic law applies to snowmobiling in Svalbard, and drivers must carry a valid driver’s license.
Extra nights at Spitsbergen hotel can be added for 850NOK for a double room/1200NOK single room.

Polar bears and safety
The polar bear is probably the foremost symbol of Svalbard’s wildlife and it is an exhilarating experience to see them in their natural habitat. The polar bear does not usually attack humans, but it can be lethal. On all guided trips and activities, safety is maintained by experienced guides carrying weapons, who will let off warning shots. The authorities on Svalbard, together with the joint travel industry, advise travellers to take part in organised activities so as to protect both the visitors and the polar bears.

Tourists on Svalbard
“You are welcome to return to Svalbard when no one has noticed you’ve already been here”. Svalbard’s nature is very exposed, especially due to the permafrost. All vegetation is protected and all traces of human activity up to 1945 are protected and regarded as cultural monuments. Svalbard’s Environmental Act regulates travel on Svalbard, so if you are planning a trip outside Administration Area 10, you must inform the Ombudsman on Svalbard and show proof of insurance.

Nooderlicht

A 46 meter long two-mast schooner, the Nooderlicht (Northern lights) is a sailing vessel from 1910. Originally built as a light ship in the Baltics, the Nooderlicht has gone through several adjustments and enhancements that make her specially equipped to sail in the arctic. However, she changed missions and hands many times and was left rusted and completely stripped. In 1992, Ted van Broeckhuysen and Gert Ritzema became smitten with the ship and lovingly restored her to better than new, ensuring that some original elements were used to retain a bit of her long history
