Introduction
Experience Oslo, Bergen, the Flåm Railway and the Sognefjord in only 4 nights / 5 days! This alternative to the Norway in a Nutshell itinerary allows you to ride the Flåm Railway, in addition to travelling the full length of the Sognefjord by boat. It’s a perfect tour for travellers looking for a boat experience, and also gives you the opportunity to travel the famous rail line between Oslo and Bergen. In addition, you’ll be introduced to Norway’s two biggest cities, Oslo and Bergen, a must for a first-time visitor to Norway.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival Oslo
Arrival at Gardermoen Airport; meet-and-greet, followed by transfer to your accommodation in the heart of Oslo City. Depending on time of arrival, spend your first day in Norway exploring the main sights of downtown Oslo. The Royal Castle, City Hall, the Akershus Fortress and the lively harbour area, Aker Brygge, are all within easy walking distance of your hotel, so you’ll be able to get a good overview of Oslo’s most important buildings, even if you arrive in the late afternoon. Stay the night in Oslo.
Day 2: Over the Roof of Norway
Today you’ll start early and head to Oslo Central Station, where you’ll board the Bergensbanen train, which will take you over the mountain roof of Norway on your way to Bergen. The railway has been voted one of the 20 best in the world, and the ride will take you through the charming villages of Gol and Geilo on your way to Myrdal Station. In Myrdal, you’ll switch trains to take the Flåm Railway, an incredible 20-km ride with a difference in altitude of 900 meters, taking you down to the beautiful village of Flåm. “Flåm” means “little place between steep mountains”, and has been one of Norway’s most popular fjord destinations since the 1800s. Stay the night in Flåm.
Day 3: The Long, Deep Sognefjord
Enjoy the first half of the day in Flåm. You’ll have free admission to the Flåm Railway Documentation Centre, located right beside Flåm Station, where you can learn about the construction of the world’s steepest railway line. At 3:30 p.m., you’ll board the express boat and get ready for an amazing fjord experience, starting with the tall, impressive mountains along the Aurlandsfjord. Out towards the sea, the scenery opens up more and you’ll see teeming, varied bird life. In the middle of the fjord, you’ll see passengers being transferred from the express boat to the ferry. The Sognefjord is Norway’s deepest (1,309 m) and longest (204 km) fjord. Arrival in Bergen, where you’ll be spending the night, is scheduled for 8:40 p.m.
Day 4: The Capital of the Fjords
You now have half a day to explore Bergen. Although one could spend much more time sightseeing in this wonderful, must-visit city, seeing it in a shorter amount of time is fully possible. Despite being an international city, Bergen has retained the atmosphere and charm of a small town, and your accommodation in the centre of the city makes an excellent starting point for visiting the essential attractions. Here you’ll find Bryggen, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site; exceptional old houses; the vibrant fish and flower market; the funicular Fløibanen, offering stunning views; great museums, and more.
In the afternoon, it will be time to make your way to the central station, where you’ll board the train that will take you comfortably back to Oslo. Late arrival in Oslo, where you’ll spend the night.
Day 5: Departure Day
Transfer by express train to Gardermoen International Airport. If your flight is in the afternoon, you’ll have time for some last-minute shopping, to visit one of Oslo’s many museums, or just to relax at a café after an enjoyable holiday.
