Introduction
This ten-day package is a round trip, taking you through the southern parts of Norway, and includes overnights in Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger and Kristiansand. Travelling by train and boat through some of Norway’s most scenic landscapes ensures you an excellent impression of the varied nature that this part of the country has to offer. The tour also lets you experience a variety of Norwegian city life, as the four different cities offer distinct culture, history and charm. The tour includes the Norway in a Nutshell® train journey from Oslo to Bergen, one of Norway’s greatest tourist attractions.
Itinerary
Day 1: The Capital of Norway
Arrival at Gardermoen Airport; meet-and-greet, followed by transfer to your accommodation, situated in the heart of Oslo City. If you arrive early, we recommend getting the Oslo Tourist Pass, which provides free travel on all public transport, free admission to over 25 museums and sites, discounts on further attractions and sightseeing, restaurants and shops. Stay the night in Oslo.
Day 2: The Highlights of Oslo
Today you’ll have the opportunity to get to know the capital of Norway. Included in the stay is a two-and-a-half-hour guided city sightseeing tour, which will take you to many of Oslo’s most impressive sights, including the Holmenkollen Ski Jump and Ski Museum, the Viking Ship Museum, the Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Royal Palace, the Polar ship “Fram”, Akershus Fortress and central Oslo. After the tour, you’ll have the rest of the day free to explore the city, go shopping, dine at cosy restaurants or just relax in this friendly capital. Stay the night in Oslo.
Day 3: Norway in a Nutshell®
Today you’ll start early and head to Oslo Central Station, where you’ll board the Bergensbanen train that will take you over the mountain roof of Norway on your way to Bergen. The ride, voted one of the 20 best railways in the world, will take you through the charming villages of Gol and Geilo on your way to Myrdal Station. In Myrdal, you’ll switch trains to take the Flåm Railway, the incredible 20 km ride with a difference in altitude of 900 meters, taking you down to beautiful Flåm. From Flåm, you’ll be transported by boat onto the Aurlandsfjord and into the World Heritage-listed Nærøyfjord, the narrowest fjord in Europe. You will then be transported by bus up the wild and beautiful Nærøydal to Voss, where you’ll board the train that takes you the last stretch to Bergen. Stay the night in Bergen.
Day 4: Highlights of Bergen.JPG)
Despite being an international city, Bergen has kept the atmosphere and charm of a small town. From your accommodation in the centre of the city, you’ll have an excellent starting point for exploring the “capital of the fjords”. Bergen is a wonderful, must-visit city, full of life and culture. Here you’ll find Bryggen, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site; exceptional old houses; the vibrant fish and flower market; cable cars offering stunning views; great museums; dynamic culture, and more. The stay includes a one-hour “minitrain” express sightseeing tour through the city centre, letting you get a panoramic view of the city from the Fjellveien Road, as well as the Maria Church, King Haakons Hall and the Rozenkrantz Tower. Stay the night in Bergen.
Day 5: The Shipping Lane of the Viking Kings
From Bergen to Stavanger, you’ll be transported by boat, letting you get a taste of the fresh air, sea and the wonderful coastline between the two cities. Following the Kongeleia shipping lane, you will be travelling the ancient route used by the Viking kings. Stay the night in Stavanger.
Day 6: Stavanger
This fourth-largest city in Norway is one of Lonely Planet’s favourites, with its lively city centre, timbered old town and historic harbour area. Stavanger is one of the fastest-growing cities in Norway, and here you will find interesting museums, great restaurants and a throbbing nightlife. Not far from Stavanger you will find the remarkable Lysefjord with the famous sights of Kjærag and The Pulpit Rock, which can be explored on the sightseeing cruises that depart daily from the harbour in Stavanger. Stay the night in Stavanger.
Day 7: From Mountains to Vast Fields
The rail line from Stavanger to Kristiansand will take you through vast fields,
moors and hills, much like the scenery around the fjords. This beautiful, fertile landscape, with its special, fascinating light, is characteristic of the south-western parts of Norway, and the train journey to Kristiansand is truly pleasant and relaxing. Stay the night in Kristiansand.
Day 8: Kristiansand
Kristiansand offers a delightful mixture of old and new and, in addition to the town itself, the municipality incorporates the surrounding hills, forests and moors, farmland, and small, quiet lakes. During your stay in Kristiansand, we suggest you visit the small, charming harbour and the fish market, go to the old town and enjoy the evening at one of the cosy restaurants in Kristiansand. Stay the night in Kristiansand.
Day 9: Norway’s Sunny Side
Through the inlands of the southeastern parts of Norway, often called Norway’s sunny side, the train will cross small valleys and rivers, closing the circle and taking you back to Oslo. Now it’s time to lie back, enjoy the peace and comfort of travelling by train, and let the impressions from your enjoyable holiday sink in.
Day 10: Departure Day
Transfer by express train to Gardermoen Airport. If your flight is in the afternoon, you’ll have time for some last-minute shopping, a visit to one of Oslo’s many museums or just to relax at a café after your holiday in Norway.
