Itinerary

A day-by-day plan to guide your journey.

  • Day 1: Arrival in Bergen

After arriving at Bergen Flesland Airport, make your way to the charming Bergen city centre, where your accommodation is located. If you arrive early, we recommend spending the afternoon strolling through the city and discovering the sights. You won’t want to miss the old wharf, Bryggen. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with centuries-old houses, a vibrant fish and flower market and an interesting range of museums. For spectacular views of Bergen, we recommend taking the Floibanen funicular up the mountainside. Tonight you will meet your tour guide and group for a welcome drink at your accommodation. You will have the evening at your leisure.

Spend the night at Zander K Hotel or similar.

    Included:
    • Information meeting and welcome drink with your guide

  • Day 2: Exploring the Majestic Fjords Route

This morning your guide picks you up to start your adventure! Travel north to Norway’s adventure capital, Voss, where you’ll see the beautiful Tvindefossen waterfall. You’ll then reach the impressive Aurlandsfjord, from where you will embark on the famous Flåm Railway, or Flåmsbana. It is a steep train ride (one of the steepest in the world!) that climbs up from Flåm to Myrdal in the mountains and comes back down again.

After the scenic ride, you will make a stop at Stegastein, to enjoy a panoramic view of the fjord below. Your journey continues to Sogndal by the Sognefjord – Norway’s longest and deepest fjord. At your accommodation for the night, dinner will be served to the group.

Spend the night at the Quality Hotel Sogndal or similar.

    Included:
    • Continental breakfast buffet at your accommodation
    • Flåmsbana railway tickets (return journey)
    • Visit to Stegastein Viewpoint

Today you continues the journey north. You’ll pass by the Fjærland road towards the Jostedalsbreen glacier, which is mainland Europe’s largest ice cap. Before you reach the quaint village of Loen, your guide will drive you along the magnificent Nordfjord with its dazzling turquoise lakes, cascading waterfalls, vast glaciers and steep mountains.

In the afternoon you will board the thrilling Loen Skylift. This cable car will take you to the altitude of 1,011 metres (3,300 feet) with amazing views of the fjord below. When you reach tonight’s accommodation, you will enjoy dinner with the group.

Spend the night at Hotel Alexandra or similar.

  • Day 4: The Grand Geirangerfjord

Today your journey will take you to the UNESCO-protected Geirangerfjord. Board the 65-minute ferry from Hellesylt to Geiranger, on which you’ll learn about the wondrous waterfalls and deep history and diverse geology of the area. Make sure to enjoy the spectacular views during the ferry ride, as the captain navigates the deep fjord.

With its fairytale landscape, Geiranger has a lot to offer nature lovers. Don’t miss the snow-covered mountaintops, delicate waterfalls like the Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil, lush green vegetation and the deep blue waters.

You will then head to Dalsnibba to visit the Geiranger Skywalk, Europe’s highest fjord viewpoint accessible by road. Enjoy the sweeping views of Geirangerfjord, as well as across to the mountains and the mighty Blåbreen glacier. The journey then returns to the village of Geiranger where you will enjoy dinner with the group at your accommodation.

  • Day 5: Thrilling Roads to Ålesund

Get ready for some especially exciting routes today! From Geiranger, your guides takes you along the steep and winding Ørnevegen, known as “the Eagle Road”. From Eidsdal you’ll then take a short ferry to Linge. If you enjoy twists and turns, you will be very impressed by the next drive up Trollstigen, “the Troll Ladder”, which is one of the most visited spots in Norway.

After passing towering mountains, you will reach Ålesund, nestled on the coast at the mouth of the fjords. It is a captivating city that was almost completely destroyed and rebuilt after a great fire in 1904. That means it looks very different from other Norwegian towns with its Art Nouveau architecture. The turrets, spires and beautiful ornamentation give the town its distinctive character, like something out of a fairytale.

Here you can take the opportunity to visit the Atlantic Sea-Park or enjoy the stunning panorama from Fjellstuen viewpoint.

Spend the night at Quality Hotel Waterfront or similar.

After breakfast at your hotel in Ålesund, get back on the bus as you continue north. Your guide will take you to Vestnes, from where you’ll board a ferry to Molde. Then you’ll head for the coast, passing by the small fishing village of Bud. This charming town has historical significance as it was the centre of trading in the 16th and 17th centuries between Bergen and Trondheim.

From here you take the famous Atlantic Ocean Road, with the vast sea on one side and majestic mountains on the other. End the day in Kristiansund, a cute town built over 5 islands with beautiful views from its natural harbour. Dinner will be served at your accommodation.

Here you will find plenty to visit and see like the Old Town Bridge (“Gamle bybro”) and the charming Bakklandet neighbourhood. Pop by the remarkable Nidaros Cathedral, with architecture to rival Notre Dame de Paris. Or discover a museum or two, such as the Ringve Museum and Gardens or the Trøndelag Folk Museum.

Arriving in Bergen, you have the afternoon to spend at your leisure. Visit some things you may have missed on arrival or discover new spots in the city. On a sunny day, we recommend heading up into the mountains via one of the cable cars to enjoy the views and natural beauty of Bergen.

Here’s a map of your travel route, to help put things in perspective.

Essential information

We recommend that you read carefully through the following information before booking this guided group tour in Norway. We’ve answered the most frequently asked questions here so you know what to expect. You’ll also find more practical advice and attraction recommendations in our online Norway Travel Guide.

On a small guided group tour of Norway, you can enjoy the spectacular scenery and immerse yourself in the local culture knowing all the details are taken care of. Nordic Visitor will arrange all your local transportation, accommodation and daily excursions.

You’ll be travelling with a knowledgeable local guide and a group of like-minded travellers. The itinerary will be pre-planned and booked for you before you arrive. This means you can land in Norway then relax as all the hassle is taken out of your travel experience.

Ahead of your arrival, you’ll receive personalised information via email, including an itinerary and detailed Norway Travel Guide. During your tour, you’ll always be able to reach us by calling our 24/7 helpline.

Your tour package will include the professional service of an experienced tour leader. They will travel with your group around Norway and join you on all guided tours, transfers and activities on the itinerary.

The tour leader will make sure everything runs smoothly and help you have the best possible experience. As an expert on Norway, they’ll be a valuable resource for any questions you might have. Feel free to ask them anything you might be curious about.

Due to the nature of this tour and the activities included, it’s not recommended for families with young children. That said, it is suitable for active children aged 12 years or older. If in doubt, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

To make sure you and your fellow travellers have a comfortable journey, we need to limit the size and amount of luggage in the bus.

Each guest can bring one suitcase or large bag that can be stored in the back of the minibus and one smaller item (e.g., a backpack or daypack) to keep inside the van for daily essentials like camera, wallet, medications and so forth. Unfortunately carry-on suitcases (cabin bags) are too large to store in the van’s overhead racks.

If you have any questions about luggage your Nordic Visitor travel consultant will be able to assist you.

All transfers between your accommodation to cruise ports are included in this package. The departure points will either be a short walk away or via another form of transport. Your tour leader will be on-hand to help direct you.

As you’ll be travelling as part of a guided group tour, your itinerary for this portion of your trip is set. But you can still customise other parts of your package.

For example, you could add extra nights in the city before or after the guided tour. Ask your personal travel consultant about adding extra nights or services.

If you’re looking to extend your Nordic adventure, you could add visits to Iceland, Scotland and/or Greenland to the beginning or end of your itinerary. Contact us for more details about customising your trip.

On this itinerary, you’ll hop aboard a Hurtigruten cruise along the Norwegian west coast. Check-in for the cruise will start early ready to depart Trondheim in the morning.

You’ll enjoy a day and night aboard this cruise ship. You’ll be staying in a cabin with a window as well as a private toilet and shower facilities.

From the ship you’ll be able to enjoy views of the beautiful Norwegian coastline and on-board entertainment in the evening. There’s a choice of cafés and restaurants to dine in on the ship, and you’re welcome to bring extra food or snacks with you from the mainland.

The Hurtigruten cruise ships consist of 11 different ships, all varying in size. That said, they all offer Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, on-board activities and eateries.

You’ll arrive in Bergen the next afternoon.

On your Norway tour, you’ll stay in accommodation that’s been hand-picked by our travel experts. We’ve partnered with local businesses and selected hotels and guesthouses based on excellent ratings, comfort and our personal experience.

You can view the detailed list of hotels for this trip under the accommodation tab.

You will also be able to choose between single and double rooms. Please note that in Norway room types are based on European standard sizes, which means they are smaller than in North America.

For example, a double room often consists of a double bed or 2 single beds pushed together. Twin rooms are 2 separate single beds. Single rooms are often smaller than the standard double.

Your guided group tour will include a fair amount of walking as you sightsee around the country. The best way to explore the towns and cities you’ll be visiting is on foot, so this tour is ideal for people who can walk between 3-5 kilometres (2-3 miles) a day.

You’ll also need to be able to carry your own luggage at accommodation and in and out of transport.

At your booked hotels and cruises, you’ll enjoy a daily breakfast buffet for the duration of this tour. You’ll also have some dinners included throughout the guided portion of this tour, as stated in your itinerary. They will consist of either a set 2 or 3-course menu, or a dinner buffet with fresh local ingredients.

Drinks are not included with your dinners.

Please notify your travel consultant in advance of any dietary restrictions. Other meals and drinks are not included and will be at your own expense during the trip.

The amount of spending money you need will depend on the standard of restaurants you decide to go to.

That said, we recommend budgeting between 100–400 NOK for lunch per person, each day. Dinners at casual restaurants might cost between 500–1,000 NOK. Meanwhile, at upscale restaurants, you can expect to pay 1,500 NOK or more. This does not include the cost of alcoholic beverages.

By booking with Nordic Visitor, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that there’s always someone there for you throughout your trip.

For support and advice during the day, you can ask your guide or call our office. And if anything unexpected happens outside working hours, you can reach us on our 24/7 helpline.

The Scandinavia-based travel expert on call will handle any unforeseen situations for you, such as unusual weather or events.

If you have a passport from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand, you won’t need a visa to visit Norway. This visa-free entry is valid for up to 90 days.

Visiting from another country? You can find out whether you require a visa to enter Norway on the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. Select your home country to view details. If you do require a visa, you will be directed to your local embassy website to learn about the visa requirements.

Your passport must also be valid for at least 3 months from your departure from Norway. It’s good to check your passport expiry date early in case you need to renew it.

On your Norway adventure, you might be surprised by the daylight hours. The country stretches from mainland Europe up hundreds of kilometres north into the Arctic Circle. Norway is so long that it spans the latitudes of 58°N to 81°N!

Its proximity to the North Pole means Norway experiences very long days in summer, even in the south. Around Oslo, Bergen and Stavanger, you’ll experience 15-20 hours of daylight. In Trondheim, the days can be even longer than 20 hours, with very bright ‘nights’ even when the sun has set.

Norway’s long summer days give you plenty of time to explore. That said, you may want to pack a sleeping mask if you are a light sleeper or tend to wake up at dawn.

Find out what the daylight hours will be during the month of your visit in this guide to time and daylight in Norway.

During the summer months, you can expect fairly stable weather in Norway.

That said, because the country spans such a large distance from north to south, temperatures are likely to vary depending on your location. For example, the west coast is usually warmer thanks to the Gulf Stream, while the north is usually cooler.

The months of June, July and August boast the warmest weather of the year. In Oslo, you can expect average temperatures around 16°C (61°F), with potential highs of 20–25°C (68–77°F). In Bergen, it is closer to 13°C (55°F), and in Trondheim the average is around 14°C (57°F).

It’s also good to know that weather conditions are often changeable in Northern Europe, so you should come ready for sun, rain and wind. For more information on the local climate, read our travel guide page on Norway weather conditions.

Please note that sightseeing is dependent on weather and road conditions. This means that your itinerary might need to be altered if these conditions aren’t favourable during your visit.

Summertime is the most stable time of year in Norway. That said, you should still be ready to experience all seasons in one day. Especially if you will be spending a lot of time outdoors, you’ll want to pack for a combination of weather conditions.

Bring lighter clothes for the warmer, sunny days, and extra layers for chilly nights in the mountains or for taking in the view from cruise ship decks.

Here is an essential summer packing list for your trip to Norway:

  • Shorts and trousers
  • Short and long sleeve tops
  • At least one warm jumper or fleece
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Light gloves, hat and scarf
  • Comfortable walking or hiking shoes
  • Sunglasses, sun hat and sunscreen
  • Eye mask to sleep despite the long daylight hours
  • Electronic gear such as smartphone, external powerpack, and travel adapters
  • A backpack for easy access to daily essentials
  • and don’t forget your camera!

An umbrella can also come in handy. If you are a wildlife watcher, you may wish to bring binoculars.

For more information, check out this Norway packing list.

In most major Norwegian cities and towns you will be able to find coin-operated launderettes, with self-service facilities, and dry cleaners. Most hotels on your trip will also offer a laundry or dry cleaning service for an additional cost.

It’s best to book as soon as you can to secure your preferred travel dates. Once you have picked your tour, check the guaranteed departure calendar to see the availability. Then, select the date you want and complete your booking.

You’ll then be able to purchase your flights with confidence.

If you like to plan well ahead, you’ll find that it’s possible to book many tours for the following year. And if you have any questions or need advice, you can always contact us.

After booking your tour package online, you will be contacted within 2 business days by your own dedicated travel consultant. They will be your point of contact for all your travel needs before, during and even after your trip.

We aim to complete bookings within a few weeks. During this time we take care of booking your accommodation, activities, and transport, confirming all parts of your journey. Once this is done, your travel consultant will provide you with all the details of your trip.

When we get back to you might depend slightly on how far ahead you’ve booked your travels and other tours running at the time.

If you have any questions before your trip, you can get in touch with our Norway travel experts. The live chat option is useful for getting a quick reply as someone answers live every day during office opening hours.

Once you’ve booked, we’ll provide you with a travel guide packed full of local tips and top attractions for your visit. You can also check out our online Norway Travel Guide where we’ve compiled useful information about topics, including:

After you have booked your tour, it will only take a few days to confirm its availability. But it may take a few weeks to create your itinerary and book everything.

Once your trip details are finalised, we’ll send you e-copies of your travel documents. This will include your personalised itinerary, our Norway Travel Guide and your service vouchers. We recommend printing your tickets and vouchers to bring with you to Norway.

So when do you check in? And what can you expect when you land in Norway?

After picking up your luggage, you’ll make your way to your accommodation. Public transport is easy to access and convenient in Norway. Or you could catch a taxi.

Check-in times vary between hotels and guesthouses, but it normally starts between 2–4 PM.

You are welcome to request an early check-in for an additional fee. Although this isn’t always available, you’ll be able to store your luggage at the hotel until check-in. Please contact your travel consultant well in advance of your trip if you’d like an early check-in.

When you depart may depend on the time of your return flight. Check out early if you’re heading to the airport for a morning flight. On the other hand, if you’re flying home later in the day, you might like to enjoy a leisurely day or visit one more attraction.

You will usually need to check out from your room around 10–11 AM. If you’re staying in town longer, you will be able to store your luggage at the hotel reception. Simply return later to collect your bags before making your way to the airport.

This tour requires a non-refundable deposit payment of 20% of the total price at the time of booking. You can view more about the deposit and cancellation fees here.

All bookings are billed in Euro (EUR). Prices displayed in other currencies are indicative only and based on the daily exchange rate. This means conversions from EUR to other currencies will fluctuate from day to day.

Reviews

We don’t like to brag, so we’ll let our happy customers do it for us.

Well organised tour with a suberb guide

Our second trip with Nordic Visitor and we won't hesitate to consider others. Very well done, well organised and offered a lot of variety. Linn was a superb tour guide/leader - knowledgeable, friendly, fun. Just terrific.

Well organized tour

The trip was well organized. The local guides were top-notch, particularly the local guide in Oslo.

Well organised

The city walking tours, over cobblestone paths, later in the day, seemed too long and tiring. Otherwise, activities and transportation were efficient and well organised. Our tour guide, Linn, was delightful, always cheerful and well organised.

Fantastic service

Our Nordic Visitor guide was just about perfect. Open, helpful, sensitive to the needs of a bunch of old folks, and always in good humor. With his booking help we had the most delightful dinner in Bergen - certainly one of the high spots of our tour.

We booked extra nights in Oslo before and after the tour. That allowed time for visiting the new National Museum, the Resistance Museum, the Ibsen Museum, Fram and the Polar Museum, the Culture Museum, and of course, the Munch Museum.

It was truly Norway in a Nutshell!

We were very happy with our tour package! It was truly Norway in a Nutshell! Could not have seen so much on our own! Our group size was perfect and our tour guide, Kristopher, was phenomenal! He took care of everything for us and was so knowledgeable about Norway! We loved him! It was a wonderful 12 days visiting our ancestors' homeland! And, the weather was absolutely perfect, not one drop of rain in Bergen! I think we saw more of Norway than they ever saw!

Excellent guide and tour

Our tour leader for the Highlights of Norway, Michelle, was excellent. She was very informative regarding Norwegian places and culture. She always made sure we had activity planned for our "non-tour" time and provided recommendations for activities/restaurants. She was a pleasure to spend our time with. All of our accommodation/transportation was great and the restaurants selected for meals provided delicious meals. Another day in Trondheim would have been nice, it seemed like a beautiful city but we were in and out pretty fast. Overall we would book another Nordic Visitor tour.
