This Self-Drive tour is ideal for the whole family, taking you around the southern part of Norway and over the mountain area of Telemark. The package includes family-oriented activities, such as learning about the Viking culture, visiting an animal zoo and amusement park, exploring a fairytale castle, and more. The package includes family-friendly accommodation in Oslo, the Tjöme area, Kristiansand and the Dalen area.
Day 1: Arrival / Explore Oslo
The tour starts at Gardermoen Airport, where you and your family are met and transferred to your accommodation in the heart of Oslo. If you arrive early, we recommend you get the Oslo Tourist Pass, which provides free travel on all public transport, free admission to over 25 museums and sites, free admission to swimming pools and discounts on further attractions and sightseeing, restaurants and shops. Stay the night in Oslo City Central.
Day 2: Norway’s Oldest Settlement
Start the day by driving along the beautiful Oslofjord to the lovely town of Tønsberg.
Tønsberg is the oldest town in Norway and was founded by the Viking king, Harald Hårfagre (“Fair-hair”) in the ninth century. In the area around Tønsberg, you will enjoy some of the country’s major tourist attractions. Visit Tønsberg Castle and the Vestfold Museum, which has a strong focus on Viking and maritime life. Then continue the journey to the southernmost tip of Tjöme, otherwise known as Verdens Ende (“The World’s End”). Tjöme is a fantastic summer hangout and offers numerous family-friendly activities, including swimming, fishing and boating. Stay the night in the Tjöme area.
Day 3: Southern Delights
Spend the morning in the Tønsberg area before heading towards Kristiansand. On the way, we recommend you stop in the lovely town of Risør, “the White Town”. It is one of the prettiest towns in southern Norway, with its U-shaped harbour, which is surrounded by historic white houses. Spend the rest of the day in the fifth-largest city in Norway, Kristiansand. Kristiansand offers a delightful mix of old and new. In addition to the town itself, the municipality incorporates the surrounding hills, forests and moors, small quiet lakes and farmland. Stay the night in Kristiansand.
Day 4: Kristiansand Amusement Park
Today you’re going to enjoy all that Kristiansand Zoo and Amusement Park has to offer. This is children’s favorite holiday destination, and here you’ll find entertainment for the whole family. The Park is actually five separate parks: A water park, a forested park, an entertainment park, a theme park and a zoo. After an exciting day in the Park, visit the charming small harbor, the fish market, go to the old town and enjoy the evening at one of the cozy restaurants in Kristiansand. Stay the night in Kristiansand.
Day 5: Telemark Canal, the Eighth Wonder of the World
After breakfast, you’ll drive north up the Telemark highway to the mountainous area of Telemark. The inland scenery on the road is stark, and life in the mountain valleys lingers in the past. The drive includes such highlights as Eidsborg Stave Church and the Telemark Canal, which at the time of building was considered by many to be the eighth wonder of the world. The area offers countless opportunities for family-friendly activities, including horse riding, canoeing and a boat tour on the Telemark Canal, hiking, bicycling and more. Stay the night in the Dalen area.
Day 6: The Heroes of Telemark
From Dalen, the journey continues to the beautiful town of Rauland, before reaching Rjukan, a high-up mountain town located in stunning surroundings. Rjukan is best known for its hydrogen factory and its part in World War II, as a producer of heavy water, an important resource for nuclear research undertaken by the Germans at the time. The factory was blown up in 1943. In 1965, its intriguing story was made into a dramatic film, entitled The Heroes of Telemark. Visit the Norwegian industrial workers’ museum, and take the Krossbanen Cable Car, which rises to 886m (2,907ft) and offers stunning views. End the day by closing the circle and heading back to the capital, Oslo. Stay the night in Oslo.
Day 7: Departure
Transfer by express train to Gardermoen Airport. If your flight is in the afternoon, you’ll have time for some last-minute shopping or a visit to one of Oslo’s many museums, or just to relax after an enjoyable family holiday.
