This package includes well-appointed accommodations in hotels plus one night on board a cruise ship; all transportation by train, coach and cruise ship; and one dinner in Flåm.

Highlights: Oslo, Dovrebanen railway, Raumabanen Railway, Ålesund, Hurtigruten coastal voyage, Geiranger fjord, Bergen, Bergensbanen railway, Nærøyfjord fjord cruise, Flåm, Flåm railway.

Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Oslo
Arrive to Gardermoen Airport in Oslo. For an easy and comfortable way to get to your hotel in central Oslo, we are happy to arrange a private transfer for you (optional; see details here).

If you arrive early, we suggest buying an Oslo Pass for free travel on all public transit along with free admission to over 30 museums and attractions plus special offers on entertainment, restaurants, shops and more. The pass can be purchased at tourist information centres or at most hotels and major attractions in the city. Spend the night at a hotel in central Oslo.

Day 2: Rail Journey Over the Mountains

Head to Oslo Central Station early in the morning. There, you will board the Dovrebanen train for a scenic ride over the Dovre mountain plateau through historic towns and nature reserves. As the second highest line after the Bergen Railway, the Dovre Railway includes great variations in terrain and altitude along with 8 kilometres of mountain tunnels.

In Dombås you will change trains for the famous Raumabanen Railway, often referred as the most spectacular line in Norway. For approximately 114 kilometres there are endless sights to enjoy, the most famous among them including the so-called “chicken bridge”, the incredible Trollveggen (“Troll Wall”) and the 850 meter Vermafossen waterfall. On arrival to Åndalsnes you will take the bus to Ålesund over the magical Sunnmørs Alps.

Spend the night in Ålesund.

Day 3: Ålesund & Geiranger Fjord Cruise

After breakfast, head to the Ålesund harbour, where you will embark on a scenic coastal cruise*, with the magnificent Geiranger fjord as the day’s major highlight. Later in the afternoon, the tour returns to Ålesund, where you have time to explore the Art Nouveau architecture of the city centre and enjoy dinner at one of the excellent bistros or seafood restaurants. The cruise ship then departs from the harbour at 00:45.

Spend the night on board the cruise ship in a cabin with private facilities.

Day 4: Bergen - City of Culture
During the night, the ship calls at Torvik, Maløy and Florø as the voyage weaves through stunning landscapes on its way to your destination—Bergen, one of Norway’s most significant cultural centres. Here, you will disembark early in the afternoon to enjoy some leisure time. We recommend a ride on the Bergens Expressen mini-train tour, which offers amazing views over the city centre from Fjellveien (“the mountain road”), with sights including the Maria Church, Rosenkrantz Tower and King Håkon’s Hall.

Spend the night at a hotel in central Bergen.

Day 5: The Gateway to the Fjords

Bergen, the “gateway to the fjords”, is Norway’s second largest city yet it retains the charming atmosphere of a small town. From your centrally-located hotel, you have easy access to all the major cultural and historical highlights of this must-see city. We highly recommend a visit to Bryggen, the old Hanseatic trading wharf that dates back over 900 years. You can also catch a glimpse of the local culture at the lively Fish Market or ride the Floybanen Funicular to Mount Floyen for more panoramic views of the city.

Spend another night in central Bergen.

Day 6: Adventures by Land & Sea

From Bergen, the early Bergensbanen train carries you to Voss, where you will board a bus bound for Gudvangen. On the way to Stalheimskleiva, Northern Europe’s steepest road, the bus stops at the Stalheim Hotel, giving you chance to enjoy the panorama over the fjords.

At Gudvangen, you will embark on a short, scenic fjord cruise to Flåm, including a passage through Nærøyfjord, the narrowest fjord in Europe. With its mighty peaks and tumbling waterfalls, this UNESCO World Heritage site has been hailed as the most breathtaking section of Sognefjord, Norway’s longest and deepest fjord. Sailing up Aurlandsfjord, the voyage ends at Flåm, a charming village where you will enjoy dinner at your hotel (included in package price).

Spend the night in Flåm.

Day 7: The Flåm Railway Experience

Spend the early part of your day exploring Flåm, including the Flåm Railway Documentation Centre by the Flåm Station, where you can learn about the construction of the world’s steepest railway track. Admission is free.

Later in the afternoon, you’ll get to experience the famous Flåm Railway firsthand as it climbs 900 metres over a span of 20 kilometres up the winding track to the Myrdal Station. Here you will switch to the Bergensbanen train, voted one of the 20 best railways in the world, a ride that takes you over Norway’s mountainous rooftop and through the charming villages of Geilo and Gol before reaching Oslo.

Spend the night in central Oslo.

Day 8: Departure from Oslo

For transportation to Gardermoen Airport, we are happy to arrange a private transfer for you (optional; see details here). If your flight is in the afternoon, you have more opportunity to do some last-minute shopping, visit one of Oslo’s many museums or just relax at a café after this enjoyable holiday.
